The Shetland Sheep Society is successor to the Shetland Sheep Breeders' Group which was formed in 1985 when, after 11 years in the care of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, appreciation of the Shetland sheep had grown, such that the breed had achieved 'minority' status on the UK mainland.
From 1990 the Group undertook pedigree registrations, published its own flock book and functioned as a fully independent body.
In 2002 the RBST removed the Shetland sheep from its 'minority' list and the Group voted to become the Shetland Sheep Society, to signal our new independendence
